The Power of “I See You” Leadership
Three little words, followed by authentic action, can change your life, and more importantly, the lives of others. The Power of “I see you.”
The Power of, I SEE YOU.
I am a firm believer that any one can be a leader. You don’t have to hold the title of Manager, Director, Vice President, C suite, Coach, Team Captain, Student President or Principal to be a leader. You can lead right where you are by modeling behaviors that make people feel safe, seen, valued, and respected for who they are.
Think of a time when someone misunderstood what you were trying to say, or you felt overlooked, unseen, or unheard. How did that make you feel?
Now reflect on the spaces you occupy and if you are a part of the majority of representation in those spaces whether it be at work, church, community groups, neighborhoods. What do those spaces look like and how do you show up in them?
Research shows, that individuals who are part of the majority are more likely to feel heard, included, and given opportunities, while those who are not are more likely to experience being overlooked, interrupted, or having to prove themselves before being fully seen.
Awareness is one thing, but what we do with it is what matters.
We all have moments where we can choose to lean in, create space, and make someone feel seen. The question is, will we take them?
We all have moments where we can choose to lean in, create space, and make someone feel seen. The question is, will we take them?
Let’s break this down into real, everyday moments:
In a meeting or group setting:
You notice the majority of the voices look like yours and are dominating the conversation. You also know someone with great ideas isn’t speaking up. Do you invite them in, mentioning what you know to be true about their perspective and then reinforce their voice after they share?
At home:
Your child or partner seems off. Do you push through your to-do list, or do you pause…sit next to them, look them in the eyes, and ask how they’re really doing? Do you let them know you see them and are there when they’re ready to talk?
In a 1:1 at work:
Someone isn’t showing up as their usual self. Do you pause to check in…not just once, but with intention so they know you genuinely care and are paying attention?
When you witness harm:
Someone is being mistreated intentionally or not. Do you speak up with clarity and conviction, setting a standard that harmful behavior is not acceptable?
In the small moments:
At a drive-thru or check out line, do you stay on your phone or do you look someone in the eye, acknowledge them, and say thank you? Do you genuinely extend a compliment on what you see or have experienced?
When someone is struggling:
Do you retreat to protect your own energy, or do you lean in creating space for them to be heard and follow up to show it wasn't just a moment, but real care?
These moments may seem small, but they are where leadership actually lives.
And this isn’t about checking a box or following a script.
To truly live in the power of “I see you,” you have to be a life long learner, curious about experiences different from your own, aware of how systems shape people’s realities, and grounded in the understanding that everyone’s story impacts how they show up.
This is a human-centered approach. Not just caring for people who look like you, think like you, or live like you, but caring about all people.
Because the strongest teams, relationships, and communities are built from diverse experiences, perspectives, and backgrounds.
And here’s the truth.
It’s not enough to simply say, “I see you.”
Authentic action, being present (truly where your feet are), showing empathy, creating connection, and leading with compassion, this is where impact happens.
As Maya Angelou said,
“People will forget what you said, they will forget what you did, but they will never for get how you made them feel.”
So go ahead. Show up for humanity today.
The world needs it.
Live Elevated. Lead with Purpose.
